Racing / South West Traveller Series
What is the SW Traveller Series and how do I enter?
The SW run a series of race days or weekends around the region. Event overall positions are accrued to generate and overall Traveller series score. The series is open to sailors sailing an International Topper class dinghy with a 6.4, 5.3 or 4.2 sail and who are members of a National Topper Class Association (ITCA), paid up members of the host club may enter any of the events. Non-members of ITCA may enter 1 training and 1 race event on a try before you buy basis to allow the young sailor to dip their toes in and see if they enjoy sailing in the Topper family.
The Traveller series is made up of 11 race events, after 10 events the sailors can discard their worst 3 events so sailors do not have to commit to every event to achieve a good series score.
In order to cater for sailors who may miss a chunk of the season for example new sailors joining the fleet mid season, or for older sailors about to transition out of the class, the overall series is split into 2 sub series with a summer series of the first 7 events and after a break for the summer school holidays when the World and National Championships are hosted an Autimn series of 4 races. So if you miss events early on or you are new to the class and you expect results to improve as the season progresses fear not there is always the Autumn series to play for.
As well as event prizes usually presented at the host club after each event there will be series prizes awarded at the conclusion of the series.
As well as Traveller race days, most events have an ITCA open training day the same weekend, this enables our young sailors to get some professional race training and gain some confidence so join in the racing.
To enable a sailor to get a result in the Traveller series the sailor must members of a National Topper Class Association (https://www.itca-gbr.co.uk/membership) and simply enter one of the included race events. There is no entry fee or entry process to join the series, the sailor is entered automatically when they enter their first race event.
