As a RYA pathway boat, the Topper Class Association offer a range of opportunities for keen sailors to obtain extra training and support as part of a Topper Training Team. In addition, to the RYA Regional Training Groups (RTG’s), the class run two teams – ITCA (GBR) 4.2 team and the ITCA (GBR) 5.3 team.
The RYA Regional Training Groups are organised by the RYA and selection details will be posted later in the year.
The ITCA (GBR) 4.2 Team is aimed at those smaller sailors who currently sail with the 4.2 rig and there are usually 5 training camps scheduled over the winter months. In order to be eligible sailors normally need to be aged over 10 and under 14 years of age on the 31st December and weigh between 33 – 45 kg. For the 2020 – 2021 season, Alistair Dickson, was appointed as the Head Coach and brings to the team great enthusiasm and drive with his years of sports coaching. The training camps for this season are being arranged in a central location enabling everyone to be able to take part. The first training camp was held in December at Burghfield Sailing Club and, although chilly, the sailors all had a fantastic weekend. Since then, due to the pandemic, the Team have had to meet regularly online and hope to be able to get out on the water soon.
The ITCA (GBR) 5.3 Team is primarily for those sailors who are aged 15 or over and under 19 on the 31st December. Six training camps are scheduled over the 2020-2021 season however, due to the pandemic, this year’s current group have been unable to meet on the water so far. The Head Coach, Sally Dugdale, has been running this Team for many years and has a wealth of experience with the Topper class.
Sailors are given the opportunity to purchase “Team” branded clothing helping to create a sense of unity.
