Roger Cleland (1944-2022)

It is with great sadness that we have to mark the passing of Roger Cleland, former ITCA (GBR) and ITCA (World) Chairman, and a stalwart of the class for many years.

Roger had been associated with the class since 1983 and his first nationals, and since 1988 as a parent, North West Representative, Vice Chairman, Chairman, International Chairman and Commodore covering 13 Nationals and six Worlds.

Racing in the North West amongst other parents he was known as the ‘Silver Fox’, with his main rival being ‘Mrs Silver Fox’, his wife Jennifer!

Roger’s wisdom, kindness and calm demeanour was admired by everyone who came into contact with him. As Deputy Headmaster at Altrincham Grammar School, he brought many of those skills to bear on the running of the class, and in his dealings with young, competitive and highly motivated sailors.

His commitment to the Topper, the ethos behind the boat and what it could deliver to sailors, will always be celebrated and appreciated by us all.

Roger’s warm smile, gentle humour and wisdom was frequently deployed in committee meetings. He had a particular and quiet way with him that made you feel acknowledged, respected and supported. His calm wisdom always came through, as well as his lovely humour. It just shone through his eyes and whole demeanour.

More recently he wrote the book on the history of the Topper and the Class Association. It is a great read!

His many admirers mark his passing with huge sadness, but also gratitude for having known him, and their thanks for all that he did for the Topper and its sailors.

Our sincere condolences go to ‘Mrs Silver Fox’ and rest of the family.
